“Peer support is a system of giving and receiving help founded on key principles of respect, shared responsibility, and mutual agreement of what is helpful. Peer support is not based on psychiatric models and diagnostic criteria. It is about understanding another’s situation empathically through the shared experience of emotion and psychological pain”

The Peer Support Worker provides emotional and social support to others who share common experience in a safe environment. The commonality may not be in relation to a specific challenge or illness, but rather to the struggle and emotional pain that can accompany the feeling of loss and/or hopelessness due to mental illness. Each person is unique in their experience and their path towards recovery.
Peer Support Workers
Research has shown that even if the person with PTSD is receiving individual therapy, they may not do as well in their treatment if they don’t feel supported at home. What we try to do is work with a couple to externalize the disorder and make it a third party in the relationship. By making PTSD an unwanted guest by having entire family communicate directly and honestly and approaching rather than avoiding uncomfortable situations, couples and children can shrink the role of PTSD in their family relationships, together.
